Your Child’s First Gymnastics Class: What to Expect

Introduction

It’s finally happening, your child’s first gymnastics class! You’ve booked a session, packed the water bottle, and they’re buzzing with excitement (and of course, a few nerves). Whether your child is completely new to gymnastics or moving to NWGA from another club, this is the start of an exciting new journey.

At Nile Wilson Gymnastics Academy, we know that stepping into something new can be a mix of anticipation and uncertainty. That’s why we’ve put together this simple guide to help you, and your child, know what to expect before, during and after their very first gymnastics class with us.

Finding the Right Gymnastics Class for Your Child

Before your child’s first gymnastics session, it’s really important to find the right class for their age and ability. All gymnastics clubs operate a little differently, with different coaching styles, schedules and more. Taking the time to find the right fit for you and your family is key.

At Nile Wilson Gymnastics Academy, we aim to support this process by offering free taster sessions, to give families the chance to visit our venues, meet our Coaches and experience our classes first-hand, without any obligation to sign-up. One parent can stay and watch their child for up to three sessions too! These no-pressure sessions allow your child to try gymnastics, have fun and most importantly, explore at their own pace. You’ll experience how our sessions aim to help children build confidence, coordination and skill, all whilst keeping them active, challenged and excited to learn!

Our NWGA ethos revolves around our ‘changing the game’ mission in gymnastics. This drives our session structure and design, by developing classes that go above and beyond the traditional gymnastics programme. At NWGA we’re not just ticking boxes, we aim to deliver inspiring, fun and engaging sessions that meet gymnastics programme requirements in a unique and fun way. It’s this approach that sets NWGA apart.

If you’re still exploring, don’t worry! Take advantage of our free taster sessions for new members and find out why families across London love our classes here.

Preparing for your Child’s First Gymnastics Class

We understand the first gymnastics class can be both exciting and nerve-wracking for children and parents alike. With a little preparation, together we can shake out some of those pre-class nerves, and be ready to learn something new!

Mental Preparation
It’s completely normal for your child to be nervous before their gymnastics session. A problem shared is a problem halved! Remember to talk with them about what to expect and talk through any questions they may have. Reassure them that there is no pressure on this session, and their Coach will guide them every step of the way. Try encouraging excitement by setting small, positive goals. This could be trying a new skill, meeting a new friend, or asking a question.

Physical Preparation
You can help your child prepare for their first gymnastics class with some gentle movement at home. Try some gentle stretching, jumping jacks, squats or set up a mini obstacle course to encourage fun movement. This may help to ease some nerves too! Remember, the aim is to keep it playful rather than tire them out.

Practical Information

  • What to wear: Comfortable sportswear such as leggings, shorts, tracksuit bottoms with leotards or t-shirts. Please note skirts, dresses and jeans are not permitted at our classes. No footwear is required either.
  • Accessories: For safety reasons, no jewellery can be worn. Long hair must be tied up.
  • What to bring: A labelled water bottle and lots of enthusiasm!

The Day of Class

The big day is here. Your child is prepared mentally and physically and now it’s time to step into the NWGA class and start their new gymnastics journey!

Here are some important reminders:

  • Arrive early. Getting to the venue a few minutes early allows you and your child the time to settle in, meet their Coaches, and get familiar with the space.
  • Meet your Coaches and Classmates. Your child will meet with their NWGA Coaches, who are all British Gymnastics trained, eDBS checked, safeguarding certified, and first aid trained. Coaches will introduce the children to each other and guide them through the session. The Coach will also be able to offer information and guidance as to what today’s session involves, and answer any last-minute questions you may have.
  • Remember to enjoy! Once the session starts, your child will forget all about the nerves and be learning new skills and making new friends before you know it.

After the Session

When the session ends, your child will likely be brimming with excitement, and maybe a little tired! Now is the perfect time to talk about their experience, who they met, what they felt and what they learned. Remember to celebrate their wins, and discuss any questions or concerns they may have for future sessions.

Every child progresses at their own pace, and our coaches are there to support them every step of the way. Recognising small wins, from mastering a balance to making a new friend, helps build long-term confidence and enthusiasm.

If they loved it (and we think they will!), you can easily book them into a regular class here. At NWGA we also offer a wide-range of activities, including Parkour and Acrobatic Dance programmes. We also run a range of half-term holiday camps across London, meaning there is something for every child at NWGA!
